Aspyr Ships Star Wars: Empire at War

Aspyr Media has announced that that real-time strategy game, Star Wars: Empire at War, has begun shipping to retailers and should be available within the next few days. The game was licensed to Aspyr by LucasArts and ported to the Mac by Aspyr Studios.

Here's more from the press release:

Star Wars: Empire at War puts the power to command an entire war for the Star Wars galaxy in the hands of players, giving them the freedom to determine how they play the game within the completely scalable and accessible gameplay. Set a few years before the events of Episode IV A New Hope, LucasArts’ Empire at War lets players wage war on the ground and in space, as well as experience the creation of the Rebel Alliance, the strengthening of the Empire and the beginnings of the Galactic Civil War.

Listener Feedback

Jarrod Nettles - make fun of name.

I played through the Empire at War demo that Aspyr released.

My opinions:

Buggy – the game crashed several times in the Galaxy screen.

Unimpressive graphics – even with all of the settings turned up this game lacks luster. The ships are equivalent to the ones from Lego Star Wars.

Boring gameplay – The space combat is nowhere near as good as Homeworld 2 (which is nearly three years older than Empire at War) and the ground combat is pretty much the same as Galactic Battlegrounds (Star Wars meets Age of Empires, if you don't remember the game).

The game feels extremely limited in terms of scope, especially when it comes to unit caps. Why in the world can I only start a ground invasion with four units, and why can't I land more until I capture more territory? In other words, the strong get stronger as the fight progresses……. The strategy is light, especially on the ground. Fling your infantry forward, protect your heavy weapons, end of match. Wait, I can't protect my heavy weapons because I can only land two fricking units of infantry. Why can't I just land my entire invasion force??? This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Why in the heck do they just sit up there in orbit? Is there any explainable reason?? Artificial game barriers to make up for weak gameplay – how typical.

I would just like to throw a suggestion at you for your podcast. I've listened to plenty of others, and I find that a really great feature would be a forum's watch. You could take some of the biggest forums that are currently active and discuss, explain, etc. with them. You could have however many you like. I know there are plenty of forums that could use some exposure on the podcast. 2 of my forums have already been sent in via e-mail and discussed so I figured it would make a nice addition, but it's up to you…

P.S. I forgot to put a picture of food, so I give you this. I know it's a picture of the movie,"March of the Penguins," but it makes me just as hungry
